Early Settlers
The Sullivan area was first settled in 1866 by Irish immigrant James Johnstone. He acquired six quarters of land along Johnstone Road. (Named for the family, now 152nd St) between New McLellan Road (Highway 10) and Old Yale Wagon Road (Fraser Highway); one for
himself, and one for each of his sons. The family cleared the land to build homes and earn their living as farmers. Mr.Johnstone served as a commissioner for the area before Surrey became incorporated in 1879. The Johnstone family was active in building the first church in Surrey (Christ Church Anglican in Surrey Center).
Henry Sullivan, another Irish immigrant, settled in the area, and in 1898 began logging "the finest timber" he'd ever seen. He and partner Tom Hiland formed The Sullivan & Hiland Logging Company in 1901, and The Surrey Shingle & Manufacturing Company in 1905. At their peak in 1905, the two companies employed 125 men, producing about 160, 000 shingles and 35,000 board feet of lumber daily. Henry's older brother, Tom, arrived in 1903 to assist in the sawmill operation. Tom served as Reeve (Mayor) of Surrey from 1910 to 1921, giving him the distinction of being the longest consecutively-elected mayor in Surrey history.
School Days
In 1906, Johnstone Road School was located on 152nd St. a half-mile north of old Sullivan Store on land donated by the Johnstone family. It was initially a one room school, with another classroom added in 1913. The school was destroyed by fire in 1950, at which time there were 81 students. A new Johnstone Road School was built at 152nd St. and 60th Ave. in 1953. It was renamed Sullivan Elementary in 1975. Today the school accommodates 367 students.
The BCER
In 1910, The B.C. Electric Railway completed tracks from Vancouver to Chilliwack. For more than forty years the interurban rail connection provided a vital transit link for Sullivan residents and businesses. The Station was situated near what is now 64th Ave and 152nd St. The structure which was being used as a chicken coop, was acquired in 2003 by The Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society. Plans are to recreate a station near it's original location.
Sullivan Community Hall
The Sullivan Community Hall was built in 1928 by volunteers to accommodate the needs of a growing community. Over the years it has served many important functions, including accommodating students following the destruction of the original Johnstone Road School. The hall is maintained by the Sullivan Community Association, and is still used for community functions. In 1998, the hall was added to the city of Surrey's Heritage Register.
